Royal Bank to hold first ever startup Accelerator Pitch competition in Scotland

The Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that it will bring its Accelerator Pitch competition to Scotland for the very first time.
Entrants are already able to compete for a £30,000 prize pot which will be awarded at a live final on 24 April. The final will take place at the formal opening of the Royal Bank’s new Accelerator hub building in Edinburgh.
One of the award winners will also receive an Out-of-Home advertising campaign delivered by JCDecaux UK.
Royal Bank Pitch competitions are designed to help founders build the confidence they need to secure investment, while also recognising the innovative ideas that will deliver future growth.
To enter, entrepreneurs based in Scotland, are required to submit a 60 second pitch video on their product and business by 5pm on 26 March. Six businesses will then move forward to the final to make their pitch in front of a live audience.
The announcement follows successful Accelerator Pitch Live events delivered in Manchester and London, with another due to be held in Northern Ireland at the Belfast Telegraph Business Awards later this month.
Heidi Simpson, Regional Accelerator Director, Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “We are delighted to announce that we will be bringing our Pitch competition to Scotland for the very first time.”
“This Royal Bank Pitch competition is all about recognising the entrepreneurial spirit and innovation that is at the heart of so many founder’s stories. We are looking for the exciting ideas that will transform and grow Scotland’s economy and build the employers of the future.
“I can think of no better way to launch our new Edinburgh Accelerator Hub building than hosting the Pitch final. The competition has gone live today, and I wish all entrants the best of luck.”
Thanh Catachanas, Head of Collaboration and Acquisition, JCDecaux UK, said: “Following the success of our collaboration with the NatWest Accelerator Pitch in London last November and our ongoing partnership with Royal Bank of Scotland, it’s fantastic to be involved again by offering an Out-of-Home advertising campaign to the winner of the Edinburgh pitch final. Edinburgh has a thriving startup and scale-up community, and it’s exciting to support founders who are building the next generation of ambitious businesses. As brands grow, visibility becomes critical, and Out-of-Home plays a powerful role in helping scale-ups reach new audiences and build trust. With our strong presence across the city and partnerships with Edinburgh City Council, Network Rail and Edinburgh Airport, we’re proud to help connect innovative businesses with the people and places that help them grow”

Bristol Startup Scoops Award In Transforming Maritime Risk And Insurance

Bristol-based tech startup Geollect has been announced as the winner of UK Hydrographic Office’s (UKHO) prestigious ADMIRALTY Marine Innovation Programme Challenge.
The award recognises Geollect’s innovation in unlocking access to data which will transform maritime risk and insurance. As the challenge winner, Geollect will collaborate with the UKHO, utilising marine geospatial data and expertise to develop an alpha product for the maritime insurance sector.
Geollect demonstrated how their technology could enrich underwriting, loss prevention and investigation functions for the maritime industry. By unlocking access to this data, these solutions will help experts across maritime insurance to increase awareness of hazards, understand the context for vessel behaviour and build a richer picture of the wider maritime environment.
UKHO is looking at ways Geollect’s data can enhance marine insurance products and reduce maritime risk. Geollect’s work has the capability to unlock and visualise UKHO’s extensive library.
Geollect specialises in using machine learning and geospatial intelligence techniques to collect, analyse and visualise vast amounts of data. They work with customers in defence, cruise lines and insurance to develop software that simplifies complex information and puts it in an easy to understand format that aids decision-making.
The data provided by UKHO will massively enrich Geollect’s solutions in the marine insurance sector. Products like electronic charts, bathymetry, CATZOC, wreck locations, offshore infrastructure and conservation areas will all help provide context for vessel behaviour. They also have the potential to shed light on claims patterns and could identify more factors that are predictive of loss and shine a light on what might constitute reckless behaviour in the maritime industry.
Geollect COO Richard Gwilliam said:
“As pioneers of new automated data driven solutions, we are really proud to have been selected to participate in this programme. We’ve successfully incorporated UKHO data for insurance clients and recognise its potential to add real value across the blue economy.
As well as accessing impactful data, we are really looking forward to working alongside experienced specialists from the UKHO. Between us we can develop effective solutions to address challenges in a number of areas of maritime risk. Adding the powerful UKHO brand will turbocharge our product offering and we can really help bring their data to life.”
Adresta becomes an independent start-up

Helvetia Insurance is spinning off the start-up Adresta. The fledgling enterprise launched under the Helvetia Kickbox programme makes all the key stages of the watch lifecycle accessible to manufacturers, merchants and buyers on a blockchain. This eliminates counterfeit and stolen goods and increases transparency on the watch market.
As part of its helvetia 20.20 strategy, Helvetia Insurance set up a corporate incubator programme. The aim is to develop new business models through to the stage where they are ready for market. Adresta is another start-up from this programme to gain its independence. Adresta’s aim is to digitalize the luxury watch lifecycle. This involves using blockchain technology to make all the key stages of the watch lifecycle available to manufacturers, merchants and buyers in digital form. Second-hand buyers in particular are often uncertain about the authenticity and origin of a watch. Adresta provides certainty and confidence. Every watch made by an Adresta partner can be identified beyond doubt and verified as an original. At the same time, counterfeit and stolen goods are identified and eliminated from the watch market. All parties benefit from increased transparency
It is not just watch buyers who gain from Adresta; the new technology offers benefits for all parties. It enables manufacturers to better forecast revenues and unit sales. And during the manufacture of specific models, errors can be identified and more swiftly rectified. Insurance companies, on the other hand, have easier access to the origin and specifications of an expensive luxury watch. These benefits have already won over the first watchmaker, with Adresta gaining its first customer in Czapek & Cie. Developed at Helvetia
Helvetia employee Michal Behr and other team members submitted the idea for Adresta under the Helvetia Kickbox programme. The conceptual design was then worked out by the later founders Mathew Chittazhathu and Nicolas Borgeaud and the original team. The team developed an initial technical solution together with the ETH juniors. Leonie Flückiger, the project manager at ETH juniors, subsequently joined the founder team as CTO. “The internal support given to new business ideas also makes Helvetia more innovative and is part of an extensive working relationship with start-ups and fledgling enterprises. This enables Helvetia to develop its core business, tap new business models and make targeted use of innovations”, says Martin Tschopp, Head of Corporate Development at Helvetia.

Societe Generale assurances invests in online life insurance startup Mutumutu

Societe Generale Assurances, one of France’s leading bancassurers and parent company of Komercni Pojistovna has invested in online life insurance startup Mutumutu through CreativeDock Insurance Holding (CDIH). Societe Generale Assurances has invested nearly CZK 30 million (EUR 1.1 million) in the Czech startup and could further increase its stake in the company by the end of 2020. This investment by one of France’s leading insurance company is unique in the Czech Insurtech environment and is strengthening the existing partnership with Komercni Pojistovna, the exclusive risk carrier of Mutumutu in the Czech market.
Mutumutu was created in 2018 as an in-house project of the Prague company builder CreativeDock. The company is already addressing the Czech market with three insurance policies: Incapacity to work, Disability and Death. Mutumutu’s business model relies on a prevention program based on a cash-back mechanism on the insurance premium, through connection to mobile health applications. Clients are rewarded for an active and healthy lifestyle with up to 30% premium’s cashback. The simplification of the customer experience and the focus on clients’ benefits is at the heart of Mutumutu’s strategy.Through this investment, Societe Generale Assurances owns a significant and strategic minority stake in CDIH and allows Mutumutu to develop its activity with the aim to triple the number of its clients within the next 12 months.
“We will be further promoting a healthy lifestyle. We will add other sports to the mobile application, which will add options to get insurance cheaper and more affordable. We prepare extensions for higher-income clients who want wider coverage,” says Jindřich Lenz, CEO of Mutumutu.
The startup has developed a technical platform that can be duplicated and is therefore considering expanding internationally.
Ingrid Bocris, Deputy General Manager of Societe Generale Assurances, in charge of Partnerships, Corporate and Innovation adds: “We support the modernization of life insurance. We are looking for ideas, but also technological maturity and the ability to deliver innovation to the market. Clear insurance with a unique reward for a healthy lifestyle that can be arranged fully online and in a few minutes is unique across Europe and it will inspire the development of the whole sector.”
“This investment perfectly fits Societe Generale Assurances’ strategy which consists in investing in startups with a strong focus on innovation, digital technologies and clients’ experience” comments Philippe Perret, CEO of Societe Generale Assurances.
Insurance startup Lemonade raises $300 million to fuel expansion

(Reuters) – Tech-driven insurance startup Lemonade Inc has signed a $300 million funding round led by Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp , the company said on Thursday. Other investors included insurer Allianz SE, Alphabet Inc’s venture capital arm GV, General Catalyst, OurCrowd and Thrive Capital. The company will use the funds to expand in the United States, launch in Europe and grow its product offering beyond home and rental insurance, Lemonade Chief Executive Daniel Schreiber said in an interview. Lemonade, which started in New York in late 2016, is part of a growing number of young companies looking to shake up the insurance sector through better use of technology. It offers insurance in 25 U.S. states and markets itself as a company that has nothing to gain by denying claims because it donates any money left over to charities chosen by its customers. Lemonade says it has digitized the entire insurance process replacing brokers and paperwork with algorithms and providing policies in as little as 90 seconds and payment of claims in three minutes. Lemonade says it collects 100 times more data than traditional carriers which will enable it to improve underwriting and pricing.
It currently has 163 employees and has sold over half a million policies so-far, Schreiber said. The company aims to grow its roster of products to be able to keep up with the evolving needs of its customers, many of whom are young first-time buyers of insurance, he said.
It hopes to take advantage of its lower operational costs than traditional players to build a global digital insurance company. “When you build the company on a purely digital substrate you have the ability to expand geographically and expand into new markets at a fraction of a cost,” Schreiber said. “We don’t have to roll into town and build a skyscraper.” The new investment round, which is targeted to close this quarter, brings the total funding raised by Lemonade to $480 million. It follows a $120 million raise in December 2017 led by Softbank with participation from existing investors.
