Rolls-Royce has successfully tested the world’s first high-speed marine engine powered exclusively by methanol on its test bench in Friedrichshafen. Together with their partners in the meOHmare research project, Rolls-Royce engineers have thus reached an important milestone on the road to climate-neutral and environmentally friendly propulsion solutions for shipping.
“This is a genuine world first,” said Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. “To date, there is no other high-speed engine in this performance class that runs purely on methanol. We are investing specifically in future technologies in order to open up efficient ways for our customers to reduce CO2 emissions and further expand our leading role in sustainable propulsion systems.”
Rolls-Royce’s goal is to offer customers efficient ways to reduce their CO2 emissions, in-line with the ‘lower carbon’ strategic pillar of its multi-year transformation programme. The project also aligns with the strategic initiative in Power Systems to grow its marine business.
The joint project meOHmare is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and combines the expertise of Rolls-Royce, injection system specialist Woodward L’Orange, and the WTZ Roßlau technology and research center. The goal is to develop a comprehensive concept for a CO2-neutral marine engine based on green methanol by the end of 2025.
Innovative technology for a new fuel
Methanol provides new challenges for engineering: unlike diesel, liquid alcohol does not ignite spontaneously and requires a completely new injection technology. “We have fundamentally redesigned the combustion process, the turbocharging, and the engine control system – and even adapted our test bench infrastructure,” explained Dr. Johannes Kech, Head of Methanol Engine Development in the Power Systems division at Rolls-Royce. “Initial tests show that the engine is running smoothly – now it’s time for fine-tuning.”
Rolls-Royce, injection system specialist Woodward L’Orange, and the WTZ Roßlau technology and research center have been working since the beginning of 2023 on the meOHmare joint project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The goal is to develop a concept for a high-speed combustion engine for ships by the end of 2025 that can be operated in a CO2-neutral manner using green methanol. Signal to the industry: Methanol technology reaches important development milestone
“With this successful test run, we are sending a clear signal: green methanol is a future-oriented fuel – and the technology for it is here,” emphasized Denise Kurtulus, Senior Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce. “The single-fuel methanol engine is an attractive solution, especially for operators of ferries, yachts or supply vessels who want to reduce their carbon footprint. The task now is to create the framework conditions for wider use.”
At the same time, Rolls-Royce is working on a dual-fuel concept that can use both methanol and diesel – a bridging technology until green methanol is widely available.
Rolls-Royce: Ρεκόρ πωλήσεων το 2022
Τις υψηλότερες ετήσιες πωλήσεις που έχει πραγματοποιήσει ποτέ στα 118 χρόνια της ιστορίας της σημείωσε η βρετανική Rolls-Royce το 2022, έχοντας διαθέσει συνολικά 6.021 οχήματα, ήτοι αύξηση 8% σε σχέση με το 2021.
Οι αριθμοί που δημοσιοποιήθηκαν από τη Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, με τις ΗΠΑ, την Κίνα και την Ευρώπη να κυριαρχούν στις πωλήσεις, έρχονται σε αντίθεση με την υπόλοιπη αγορά αυτοκινήτου, που πασχίζει να ανακάμψει από την πανδημία και να αντιμετωπίσει την παγκόσμια έλλειψη ημιαγωγών.
Οι πωλήσεις καινούριων αυτοκινήτων στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο περιορίστηκαν το 2022 στο χαμηλότερο επίπεδο των τελευταίων 30 ετών, παρά την ανάκαμψη που άρχισε στο τέλος της χρονιάς, είχε ανακοινώσει την Πέμπτη η οργάνωση του τομέα SMMT.
Όμως, όπως και άλλες μάρκες πολυτελείας, π.χ. η Bentley ή η Bugatti, η Rolls-Royce είχε ήδη καταγράψει το 2021 πωλήσεις ρεκόρ.
Η Lamborghini επίσης είχε ανακοινώσει τον Αύγουστο πως έχει ήδη προπωλήσει όλη την παραγωγή της μέχρι τις αρχές του 2024.
Η Rolls-Royce, η οποία ιδρύθηκε στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα και εξαγοράσθηκε από την BMW το 1998, ετοιμάζει παράλληλα για φέτος την παρουσίαση του Spectre, του πρώτου πλήρως εξηλεκτρισμένου οχήματός της, οι προπαραγγελίες για το οποίο έχουν “υπερβεί τις προσδοκίες”, όπως διαβεβαιώνει η εταιρεία.
Οι πρώτες παραδόσεις αναμένονται για το τέταρτο τρίμηνο του 2023. Η Rolls-Royce έχει ανακοινώσει πως από το τέλος του 2030 θα κατασκευάζει μόνο ηλεκτρικά αυτοκίνητα.
Rolls-Royce: Κέρδισε σύμβαση 2,6 δισ. δολαρίων από την πολεμική αεροπορία των ΗΠΑ
Κινητήρες για τα βομβαρδιστικά Β-52 Stratofortress της Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας των ΗΠΑ επελέγη να παρέχει η Rolls-Royce, σε μια σύμβαση αξίας έως και 2,6 δισ. δολαρίων για τη βρετανική εταιρεία.
Οι κινητήρες F-130, οι οποίοι θα κατασκευαστούν στο εργοστάσιο της Rolls-Royce στην Ινδιανάπολη, επελέγησαν ως κινητήρες αντικατάστασης για τα βομβαρδιστικά, έναντι αρχικής εξαετούς συμφωνίας 500 εκατ. δολαρίων, η οποία θα μπορούσε να αυξηθεί στα 2,6% μακροπρόθεσμα.
Η μετοχή της εταιρείας, η οποία κέρδισε τη σύμβαση από την Pratt & Whitney της Raytheon, ενισχύεται 5%, στο υψηλότερο επίπεδο από τον Ιούνιο του 2020.
Η Jefferies έκανε λόγο για “καλή νίκη” της Rolls-Royce και δήλωσε ότι δεν θα άλλαζε άμεσα τις εκτιμήσεις, προσφέρει ωστόσο επιπλέον άνεση στις μακροπρόθεσμες εκτιμήσεις και είναι θετική για το κλίμα.
Rolls-Royce Signs MoU for mýa Platform
Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems, and Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Energy Solutions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on mýa, the open asset-and-fleet-management-system enabling the integration of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), asset owner and operator data across the marine, power and energy industries, among others.
Dr. Uwe Lauber said: “I’m very happy that a major player such as Rolls-Royce has chosen to join the mýa organisation and to support the platform’s development. With the launch of mýa, we want to reduce complexity for our customers, and other OEMs alike, and to lower the hurdles for getting payback from data.” Members of mýa will have the opportunity to access all of their digital assets via a single interface that integrates all data-streams from OEMs, asset owners and operators and enables a complete system-view.
Andreas Schell added: “Our mission is to work together to further develop and promote the mýa platform in support of our own digital products and services. Using mýa technology, we’ll be able to provide data for our customers within a single platform. And we’re very keen to move forward on this because we see it as a major milestone in our development. At the same time, this initiative can only take off if other suppliers and industry actors also decide to join up.” The hope is that other providers, customers and industry actors will participate in the development and use of the platform.
Per Hansson, Head of Digital and Strategy at MAN Energy Solutions, said: “Solution providers offer a plethora of digital solutions for system-performance optimisation, resulting in a complicated, uncoordinated view of the various equipment that vessel and plant operators maintain. Essentially, mýa helps solve this problem by simplifying the retrieval of relevant data from these solutions.”
Jürgen Winterholler, Vice-President of Digital IT at the Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems, explained: “It is our goal to have the best fleet and asset management service for our customers based on the highest data security standards. We will focus on delivering this service through our MTU Go! platform, by cooperating with mýa to set standards across the industry. We are endeavoring to build an open, collaborative culture where asset related data can be shared easily and securely between organisations and companies. We feel the day of technology vendors and manufactures trying to lock customers into their proprietary digital platforms by holding data hostage, is over.”
Rolls-Royce: Ρεκόρ παραγωγής μελιού, αφού δεν παράγει αυτοκίνητα προς το παρόν…
Λόγω της πανδημίας, η βρετανική αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία Rolls-Royce έχει ακινητοποιήσει την αλυσίδα παραγωγής των υψηλού κύρους αυτοκινήτων της. Αυτό, όμως, δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν εξακολουθεί να παράγει μέλι!
Ναι, σύμφωνα με το BMWBLOG, η αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία ανακοίνωσε ρεκόρ παραγωγής μελιού στο μελισσοκομείο της στο Goodwood του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, όπου μια στρατιά 250.000 μελισσών εργάζεται ακατάπαυστα. Μάλιστα, η εταιρεία στοχεύει να υπερβεί τον στόχο που έχει θέσει φέτος όσον αφορά τον όγκο παραγωγής. Είναι εδώ και τρεις σεζόν που η Rolls-Royce παράγει μέλι και δηλώνει ότι το μέλι της είναι η «Rolls-Royce του μελιού». Το μελισσοκομείο «Goodwood Apiary» βρίσκεται σε μία έκταση περίπου 170 τετραγωνικών χιλιομέτρων, γεμάτη με μισό εκατομμύριο δέντρα, θάμνους και αγριολούλουδα. Η εταιρεία μελισσοκομίας ιδρύθηκε το 2017. Διαθέτει, μάλιστα, και έξι παραδοσιακές ξύλινες κυψέλες. Οι πέντε από αυτές έχουν πάρει το όνομά τους από τους θρύλους τεσσάρων τροχών της Rolls-Royce: Phantom, Wraith, Ghost, Dawn και Cullinan. Η έκτη έχει το όνομα της μασκότ της αυτοκινητοβιομηχανίας: Spirit of Ecstacy. «Το μελισσοκομείο υπογραμμίζει περαιτέρω την αφοσίωσή μας στο περιβάλλον, κάτι το οποίο σφραγίζει όλα όσα κάνουμε στο Goodwood» δήλωσε ο διευθυντής επικοινωνίας της Rolls-Royce, Richard Carter.
«Τα βιώσιμα κτήριά μας, τα συστήματα διαχείρισης του βρόχινου νερού και το καταφύγιο άγριων πτηνών έχουν ήδη κάνει το σπίτι της Rolls-Royce στο Goodwood μια από τις πιο φιλικές προς το περιβάλλον εγκαταστάσεις παραγωγής στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Με αυτό το πρότζεκτ, που αξιοποιεί τη βιοποικιλότητα της τοποθεσίας, συνεισφέρουμε σε σημαντικό βαθμό στη διατήρηση και προστασία του ζωτικής σημασίας πληθυσμού μελισσών της Βρετανίας» υπογράμμισε. Η βρετανική αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία δεν εμπορεύεται τη «Rolls-Royce του μελιού». Δίνει το μέλι σε πελάτες της.

Όμιλος BMW: Πούλησε 2,52 εκατ. αυτοκίνητα το 2019
Κατά 1,2% ενισχύθηκαν οι πωλήσεις του Ομίλου BMW (που περιλαμβάνει τις διεθνείς πωλήσεις BMW, Mini και Rolls Royce), φτάνοντας στα 2,52 εκατ. οχήματα το 2019 από 2,2 εκατ. το 2018.
Η BMW μόνη της είχε 2,17 εκατ. πωλήσεις οχημάτων το 2019, ενώ ο Όμιλος BMW κατέγραψε ρεκόρ πωλήσεων στην Κίνα και τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.
Οι πωλήσεις BMW και Mini στην Ευρώπη υποχώρησαν ελαφρώς σε ετήσια βάση, αντανακλώντας τις πολιτικές και οικονομικές αβεβαιότητες, ενώ για το 2020 αναμένονται πωλήσεις στα επίπεδα του 2019.
H ανταγωνίστρια Daimler αντίστοιχα ανακοίνωσε ότι οι πωλήσεις της έφτασαν τα 2,34 εκατ. την περασμένη χρονιά, καταγράφοντας ρεκόρ πωλήσεων για ένατο συνεχόμενο χρόνο.
Rolls-Royce: Άύξηση πωλήσεων κατά 25% το 2019
Κατά 25% αυξημένες παρουσιάζονται οι πωλήσεις της Rolls-Royce το 2019, υποστηριζόμενες από τη σταθερή ζήτηση για το πρώτο της SuV, Cullinan, έναν χρόνο μετά την έκδοσή του.
Ειδικότερα, η βρετανική εταιρεία (ιδιοκτησίας της γερμανικής BMW) πραγματοποίησε πωλήσεις 5.152 οχημάτων το 2019, από 4.107 οχήματα τον προηγούμενο χρόνο.
Ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της εταιρείας, Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, δήλωσε σχετικά: «Η περσινή παγκόσμια ζήτηση για το Cullivan SUV βρίσκεται πίσω από αυτήν την επιτυχία και αναμένεται να σταθεροποιηθεί το 2020».
