“Unfolding the LNG supply chain in Eastern Mediterranean” – The outcomes of Poseidon Med II event in Limassol
The LNG bunkering story for Eastern Mediterranean was unveiled on 11th June in Limassol during the event organised by the European co-funded Poseidon Med II project. Government officials along with representatives from the shipping and energy industry shaped the event agenda, which comprised of interesting presentations and a vivid panel discussion on the stage of Crowne Plaza Limassol Ballroom.
During the welcome session, Cyprus Deputy Minister of Shipping Natasa Pilides underlined the importance of the industry preparation to meet the environmental challenges set by international regulations. “We are looking forward to such LNG projects that offer realistic solutions to shipping industry”, she concluded.
During his presentation, George Polychroniou, Poseidon Med II Project Manager, Executive Director Strategy & Business Development at Public Gas Corporation (DEPA), announced the BlueHubs project which will materialise LNG bunkering applications in the ports of the region, based on the outcomes of Poseidon Med II. Stella Fyfe, European Projects Coordinator at Bunkernet, revealed the specific LNG bunkering plans for Cyprus, which include the market preparation (under CYnergy project) the FSRU installation (under CyprusGas2EU), the construction of an LNG bunkering vessel based in Limassol and 2 Mobile LCNG stations & 3 LNG tanker trucks (within BlueHubs project).
The LNG feeding source of the region, the Revithoussa LNG terminal, and its small-scale profile was highlighted by Joseph Florentin, Poseidon Med II Technical Coordinator & Corporate Development Department Manager at Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA).
The first session was concluded with Panayiotis Mitrou, Technology & Innovation Manager, South Europe, Marine & Offshore Business Development at Lloyd’s Register, who pointed out that safety and training requirements are all ready in place for the East Med transition to LNG.
Whether the shipping industry is prepared for the LNG as fuel option was the focus of the roundtable discussion with all speakers and the contribution of Oleg Kalinin, Fleet Director at SCF Management Services (Cyprus) and Antonis Trakakis, Technical Manager at Arista Shipping under the moderation of Peter Wallace, Chief Engineer Oil & Gas at Lavar Shipping. The panellists reacted to audience insights on the benefits of LNG as fuel compared to other options, the infrastructure challenge, conversion costs & safety implications as well as the horizon of LNG bunkering operations in Cyprus, which were highlighted during a live-poll.

Poseidon Med II: «Η Ανατολική Μεσόγειος εισέρχεται στην εποχή του LNG»
Η εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα LNG και τα σχέδια για τον ανεφοδιασμό πλοίων στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο αποκαλύφθηκαν στις 11 Ιουνίου 2019 σε ειδική εκδήλωση που διοργανώθηκε από το ευρωπαϊκό συγχρηματοδοτούμενο πρόγραμμα Poseidon Med II στη Λεμεσό, με τη συμμετοχή εκπροσώπων των κλάδων ναυτιλίας και ενέργειας, καθώς και αξιωματούχων της κυπριακής κυβέρνησης.
Η Υφυπουργός Ναυτιλίας της Κύπρου, Νατάσα Πηλείδου, κατά την εναρκτήρια ομιλία της έδωσε έμφαση στην έγκαιρη προετοιμασία της ναυτιλίας για την επίτευξη των διεθνών περιβαλλοντικών στόχων που έχουν τεθεί και χαιρέτισε τη συμβολή των προγραμμάτων, όπως το Poseidon Med II, για την ανάπτυξη ρεαλιστικών λύσεων προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση.
Ο Γιώργος Πολυχρονίου, Συντονιστής Διευθυντής Δραστηριοτήτων Στρατηγικής, Ανάπτυξης, Διοικητικών & Πληροφορικής της ΔΕΠΑ, ανακοίνωσε το πρόγραμμα BlueHUBS, το οποίο εφαρμόζει στην πράξη τα πορίσματα του Poseidon Med II με την ανάπτυξη υποδομών ανεφοδιασμού πλοίων με LNG στα λιμάνια της περιοχής – Πειραιάς, Λεμεσός, Ηράκλειο. Ειδικότερα, τα σχέδια σχετικά με τον ανεφοδιασμό πλοίων με ΥΦΑ στην Κύπρο παρουσιάστηκαν από τη Στέλλα Fyfe, Συντονίστρια Ευρωπαϊκών Προγραμμάτων στη Bunkernet. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στην εγκαθίδρυση της αγοράς LNG στην Κύπρο (στα πλαίσια του προγράμματος CYnergy), στην εγκατάσταση Πλωτής Μονάδας Αποθήκευσης & Επαναεριοποίησης φυσικού αερίου -FSRU- (στο πλαίσιο του έργου CyprusGas2EU), στην κατασκευή ενός πλοίου τροφοδοσίας (LNG Bunkering vessel) με έδρα τη Λεμεσό, δύο κινητών μονάδων αποθήκευσης LCNG και τριών βυτιοφόρων οχημάτων LNG (στα πλαίσια του προγράμματος BlueHUBS).
Ο Σταθμός ΥΦΑ στη Ρεβυθούσα ως κύρια πηγή τροφοδότησης LNG στην περιοχή και η ανάπτυξη υποδομων μικρής κλίμακας παρουσιάστηκαν από τον Δρ Ιωσήφ Φλωρεντίν, Διευθυντής Εταιρικής Ανάπτυξης του ΔΕΣΦΑ. Η πρώτη ενότητα της εκδήλωσης ολοκληρώθηκε με την παρουσίαση του Παναγιώτη Μήτρου, Διευθυντή Τεχνολογίας & Καινοτομίας, Θαλάσσιων & Υπεράκτιων Δραστηριοτήτων Νότιας Ευρώπης του Lloyd’s Register, ο οποίος τόνισε ότι έχουν τεθεί τα πρότυπα ασφάλειας και εκπαίδευσης για την ασφαλή διεξαγωγή επιχειρήσεων ανεφοδιασμού με LNG στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο.
Κατά τη δεύτερη ενότητα, οι ομιλητές με τη συνδρομή του Oleg Kalinin, Fleet Director στη SCF Management Services (Cyprus) και του Αντώνη Τρακάκη, Τεχνικού Διευθυντή της Arista Shipping υπό τον συντονισμό του Peter Wallace, Chief Engineer Oil & Gas στη Lavar Shipping, συζήτησαν κατά πόσο η ναυτιλία είναι έτοιμη να στραφεί προς το LNG. Επί τάπητος τέθηκαν τα οφέλη του LNG συγκριτικά με άλλα καύσιμα, θέματα υποδομών, ασφάλειας και μετασκευής πλοίων, καθώς και η υλοποίηση των κυπριακών σχεδίων, ζητήματα που αναδείχθηκαν από τους συμμετέχοντες μέσω ηλεκτρονικής ψηφοφορίας (live polling).
