Visit of a Delegation from Georgia to the Port of Piraeus
On 13 May 2026, PPA S.A. welcomed a delegation from Georgia to the Port of Piraeus, headed by Ms. Tamar Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, who visited PPA on behalf of the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Ms. Mariam Kvrivishvili.
Ms. Ioseliani represents the Transport and Logistics portfolio within the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, a broad multi-sectoral body overseeing, among others, the areas of energy, transport, logistics, tourism and trade. The delegation also included the Ambassador of Georgia to Greece, Mr. Levan Beridze, and the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Georgia, Mr. David Jalagania.
The visit included a tour of the port facilities and a meeting with the Deputy CEO of PPA S.A., Mr. Angelos Karakostas, during which issues of common interest in the fields of ports, transport and logistics were discussed, as well as the prospects for further cooperation in the field of port infrastructure development.
PPA S.A.: Emergency Preparedness Drill for Sea Pollution Response at the Port of Piraeus
On March 31st, an activation drill of the PPA Spillage Contingency Plan was conducted at the Cruise Terminal of PPA S.A., simulating a sea pollution incident.
The exercise was carried out following a directive issued by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, as part of the implementation of preparedness exercises at a national level.
At the Port of Piraeus, the emergency response drill was organized in cooperation with Antipollution SA and simulated an oil spill response scenario involving a cruise vessel.
During the exercise, emergency response equipment was deployed and operated, including antipollution floating barriers, skimmers, and containment booms. A floating containment barrier was also deployed around the cruise vessel, supported by the response vessels Orca, Eco Wave, and Fighter.
The drill was successfully completed, with all prescribed procedures implemented as planned.
Such initiatives play an important role in strengthening coordination, operational readiness, and environmental protection capabilities across the maritime sector.
PPA S.A.: Transportation of Electric Buses through the Port of Piraeus
In the early morning hours of Saturday, 4 April, 155 electric buses manufactured by Yutong were successfully received and unloaded by Piraeus Port Authority staff at the Port’s Car Terminal. Of these, 125 will be added to the fleet of OSY S.A. (Athens Urban Transport Organization), while the remaining 30 are destined for Serbia.
The buses were received at the Port of Piraeus by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Konstantinos Kyranakis, the Secretary General of Transport, Mr. Stelios Sakaretsios, the CEO of OSY S.A., Mr. Stefanos Agiasoglou, and on behalf of PPA S.A., the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Angelos Karakostas.
As Mr. Karakostas stated, “the Port of Piraeus reaffirms its role as a vital link in the supply chain, and operating around the clock, 365 days a year, it is ready to respond with speed and high-level services even to the most demanding cargo. We are particularly pleased when the cargo we are called upon to handle comes to contribute to improving the quality of life of Greek citizens, as is the case with these electric buses.”
PPA S.A.: Visit of a Delegation from the Embassy of Japan to the Port of Piraeus
The CEO of PPA S.A., Mr. Su Xudong, welcomed at the company’s headquarters, a delegation from the Embassy of Japan in Greece, led by Mr. Shu Tamaura, Director of the Second Europe Division, European Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
The meeting took place in a particularly positive atmosphere, focusing on recent developments in the wider region as well as the services provided by the Port of Piraeus. In addition, the factors that have contributed to the successful trajectory of the Piraeus Port Authority and its development into one of the largest and most strategic ports in Europe were discussed with great interest.
During the visit, the delegation toured the main facilities and infrastructure of the port, where the services provided by Piraeus Port Authority were presented, highlighting PPA S.A.’s extroverted outlook as well as its commitment to cooperation with international partners.
PPA S.A.: Completion of Emergency Drill for Pollution Incident Response at the Port of Piraeus
Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA S.A.) carried out, once again this year, in the central Port and specifically in the Ferry Terminal (Gate E7), an emergency drill for responding to incidents of marine and land pollution.
The primary purpose of this drill was the knowledge enhancement and the acquisition of specialized experience, both by the staff of PPA S.A. and by the port users, for the effective activation and implementation of the Marine and Land Pollution Response Plan. Additionally, during the execution of the drill, the available and fully operational equipment used for responding to pollution incidents was demonstrated. The drill was conducted in collaboration with PPA S.A.’s specialized contractor responsible for the implementation of the “ANTIPOLLUTION ANE” Plan, and in the presence of the competent Hellenic Coast Guard.
It is emphasized that environmental protection and the adoption of preventive measures constitute a fundamental pillar of the strategy on the basis of which the company implements the plan for the further modernization and development of the Port of Piraeus. In this context, PPA S.A. carries out numerous environmental projects and initiatives that contribute to the prevention of environmental incidents and to the formation of an overall preventive approach to contemporary environmental challenges.
The CEO of PPA S.A., Mr. Su Xudong, expressed his sincere gratitude to the staff for the proper and successful completion of the drill, emphasizing that continuous and systematic preparation constitutes a fundamental factor for the effective management of potential emergency incidents. As he noted, targeted training and regular exercises create the necessary conditions for immediate response and a high level of operational readiness.
Furthermore, Mr. Su Xudong highlighted that the Port of Piraeus is developing with absolute commitment to the principles of sustainability and environmental protection, consistently shaping the conditions to become a modern, competitive, and exemplary green port.
Following the conclusion of the drill, a special evaluation report is prepared, recording the results obtained from its execution, as well as any areas for improvement to achieve the highest possible level of operational readiness.
PPA S.A.: Solidarity on Board by PPA S.A. The Sailing Ship “Nave Italia” at the Port of Piraeus
PPA S.A., driven by a strong sense of social responsibility and a tangible human-centered approach, welcomed the historic sailing ship “Nave Italia” to the Port of Piraeus on June 18th, which remained berthed at the Cruise Terminal until the end of the week. During its stay, the ship hosted children and young people experiencing mental and emotional challenges, offering them a unique therapeutic and educational experience on board.
True to its values of inclusion, solidarity and social cohesion, PPA S.A. actively supports this important initiative by providing various forms of assistance. It is noted that on Wednesday, June 18th, the vessel was visited by the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Greece, underscoring the emblematic significance of the “Nave Italia” mission and honoring Greek-Italian cooperation in the field of social solidarity.
“Nave Italia” is a brig-rigged sailing ship, 61 meters in length with a sail area of 1,300 square meters, and it is considered the largest vessel of its kind in the world. Since 2007, it has been part of the Italian Navy fleet and is operated by the non-profit Foundation “Tender to Nave Italia”, established by the Italian Navy and the Yacht Club Italiano. The vessel can accommodate up to 22 guests in addition to the crew and serves as a unique setting for the implementation of research, educational, training, and therapeutic programs.
Specifically, the ship’s crew, in collaboration with the Foundation’s specialized scientific and pedagogical team, implements innovative adventure therapy programs designed to enhance self-esteem, team spirit and the psychological empowerment of children and young people facing psychosocial challenges.
The mission of “Nave Italia” is encapsulated in promoting an authentic culture of inclusion and respect for diversity, with the ultimate aim of combating social exclusion, eliminating prejudice and empowering the most vulnerable members of society.
By actively supporting initiatives with a meaningful social impact, PPA S.A. remains a committed participant in the collective transition towards a more inclusive, just and humane society.
PPA S.A.: Port of Piraeus: A pioneer in raising awareness and taking action for Climate Change
The tangible and immediate response of the Port of Piraeus to the major challenge of Climate Change was presented at a conference titled “The Port of Piraeus and Climate Change,” held yesterday at the PPA’s Stone Warehouse.
In the presence of representatives from the Government, Local Authorities, major stakeholders of the maritime sector and the scientific community, the Management of PPA S.A. presented the first comprehensive study of its kind in Greece, aiming at the resilience and sustainability of port infrastructure, as well as the actions that make the Port of Piraeus a pioneer in climate awareness and preparedness. The study was developed in cooperation with a consulting – research company and a specialized team from the Academy of Athens.
The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, in his remarks said: “I know the consequences of the climate crisis – I experienced them in the harshest way in our country over the past few years. The entire Mediterranean basin is also experiencing these consequences, and unfortunately, this phenomenon is expanding — both across more sectors and more countries — causing significant problems. First and foremost, in the safety of citizens; secondly, in their infrastructure and property; and thirdly, in critical infrastructure such as our ports. I want to say that, in our view, the impossible must become possible: we must create a stronger framework for both protection and forecasting, based on these steps, so that we can rise to the occasion in the face of climate change”.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Kostas Katsafados, stated that: “For the first time in Greece, one of Europe’s most important ports -the Port of Piraeus- is undertaking a holistic and scientifically substantiated assessment of the impacts of climate change and that the State supports efforts towards this direction”.
The Mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, the Mayor of Perama, Giannis Lagoudakos, the Deputy Mayor of Piraeus, Dimitris Karydis, the Deputy Regional Governor of Piraeus, Stavroula Antonakou and Alexandros Koulidis, an official from the Ministry of Environment also delivered their greetings.
The actions that were necessary in order for the Port of Piraeus to adapt to Climate Change were presented by the Deputy CEO of PPA S.A., Panagiotis Tsonis. As he noted, “ports are called upon and are obligated to play a leading role in addressing climate action.”
The renowned Physicist, Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, and National Ambassador for Climate Change, Professor Christos Zerefos, spoke on the challenge of Climate Change. He emphasized that “the climate crisis is unfolding at a pace faster than previously estimated, and an increase in extreme weather phenomena is expected “.
The CEO of PPA S.A., Su Xudong welcomed all the attendees and commented that “today’s event highlights the importance of collaboration for the effective promotion of the sustainable development”.
As part of the conference, the Special Study on Shielding and Adapting to Climate Change for the Port of Piraeus was presented, with its main objective being the analysis of the port’s vulnerability based on current climate models. Related presentations were delivered by Ms. Chrysanthi Kontogiorgi, Deputy Head of the PPA’s Property and Environmental Services Department; Mr. Ioannis Kapsomenakis, Researcher at the Academy of Athens’ Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology Research; Ms. Eleni Gouvatsou, Civil and Environmental Engineer at the Environmental Consulting Company ADENS S.A.; and Ms. Stella Kaimaki, also a Civil and Environmental Engineer at ADENS S.A.
PPA S.A.: Targeted infrastructure interventions and upgrade works in full progress to enhance operational readiness of the Port of Piraeus in view of the upcoming summer season
Upgrade works are progressing at a rapid pace at the central passenger port of Piraeus in anticipation of the summer season and the expected surge in passenger traffic. In particular, a plan of immediate interventions is being implemented as part of the broader investment framework carried out by Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA S.A.) in recent years, aiming to optimize services and ensure a higher quality travel experience for passengers.
According to updated data, the Port of Piraeus serves approximately 20 million passengers annually, standing as the largest port in Europe and one of the largest globally. Traditionally, the port experiences a notable increase in passenger traffic during the summer months, which underscores the imperative need to enhance both infrastructure and services—within the context of PPA S.A.’s ongoing vigilance and steadfast commitment to meeting the needs of the wider community.
Indicatively, the interventions currently underway include the renovation of building facilities at passenger terminals, the installation of shaded waiting areas with cooling systems, new seating and greenery, and improved signage. Further actions under development include the creation of designated areas for car and truck parking for embarkation/disembarkation, reinforcement of port safety protocols, provision of free fresh water via dispensers, installation of chemical toilets, and deployment of a specialized waste sorting and collection system to ensure cleanliness and promote recycling. Additionally, the port’s horizontal road markings are being renewed, with a particular focus on enhancing accessibility for wheelchair users through the special signage and color marking of existing disability access ramps.
This represents a wide scope of activities which aims to reshape the day-to-day operation of the central passenger port of Piraeus and reinforce its strategic role as a vital gateway to the Greek islands and a key hub in tourism connectivity. The interventions prioritize safety, accessibility, and quality service for travelers, aligning with the objectives set by the Greek State and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy to ensure a modern, secure, and fully functional port.
The above-mentioned scheduled upgrades are integral parts of a proactive strategic preparation plan in view of the peak travel season, as systematically implemented by PPA S.A. each year to ensure the operational readiness of the Port of Piraeus. As we approach the heart of the travel season, the overarching goal of the Port of Piraeus remains to serve the thousands of passengers who pass through it daily with safety and efficiency, tangibly reflecting its people-centered character.
PPA S.A.: Arrival of first COSCO SHIPPING vehicle carrier at the Port of Piraeus
The Port of Piraeus took a significant step in expanding its role as a key vehicle transshipment hub in the Eastern Mediterranean with the arrival of the MV COSCO SHENG SHI, from COSCO Shipping Car Carriers to call at the Greek port, marking the launch of a new regular monthly service by China’s largest maritime vehicle transport provider.
The Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC), measuring 182.8 meters in length and 32.2 meters in width with a capacity of 5,276 vehicles, discharged 199 GEELY passenger cars and 17 electric buses on its maiden stop in Piraeus.
COSCO Shipping Car Carriers operates a fleet of more than 13 modern PCTC vessels. The decision to include Piraeus in its regular rotation underscores the port’s strategic importance in the global automotive supply chain.

PPA S.A: MSC Cruise sailings started at the Port of Piraeus, a leading homeport cruise port in the Mediterranean
The Management of PPA S.A. welcomed the MSC Sinfonia to the port of Piraeus for 2025, hosting a special event where PPA’s DCEO, Cpt. Jin Beiyuan, exchanged commemorative plaques with the ship’s captain, Mr. Giuseppe Cazzano. The MSC Sinfonia, with a capacity of 2,646 passengers, and 274.9 meters in length and 13 decks, is expected to make 52 arrivals in Piraeus by the end of this year.
MSC Cruises, which operates primarily embarkation cruises throughout the year, is expected to approach the port 110 times in 2025 with its ships – including MSC Sinfonia, MSC Fantasia, MSC Armonia, and luxury vessel Explora I, marking a significant increase in arrivals from the previous year.
It is noteworthy that the upward trend of homeporting cruises continues in the new year at the port of Piraeus, with 2025 bookings expected to surpass the record of 1 million homeporting passengers achieved in 2024. Based on the above data, Piraeus is one of the top three largest Mediterranean Homeports.
The rise of homeporting brings substantial benefits in the local and national economy, boosting job creation and increasing revenues for local businesses in tourism, catering, supplies, and ship repairs.
