Andrew Carrier appointed as Chief Executive Officer of MS Amlin Underwriting Limited

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s (re)insurer, announced the appointment of Andrew Carrier as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Carrier, currently MS AUL’s Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), will take up the role on 1 January 2023, subject to regulatory approval.
Carrier brings more than two decades of leadership experience in international (re)insurance markets, taking up his new role after two years as MS AUL’s CUO. He has played a pivotal role in transforming MS AUL’s underwriting strategy and portfolio, creating a more sustainable future for the Company and helping it return to profitability.
Prior to his role at MS AUL, Carrier spent six years at Everest Re, where he was responsible for the firm’s London Market, Continental Europe, and Asia Pacific reinsurance operations. His career also includes serving as Group CUO at Argo for seven years and more than two decades at Kiln.Carrier succeeds Johan Slabbert who has been appointed as CEO of MSIG Holdings (U.S.A.) Inc. In this newly created role, Johan will be responsible for driving forward the US growth strategy of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (MSI) – MS AUL’s parent company – as it seeks to build on its growing domestic foundations following the proposed acquisition of Transverse LLC, in August this year, subject to regulatory approval. Slabbert will remain with MS AUL until the end of the year to support a smooth transition and regulatory handover.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited appoints Simon Morgan as Head of Property Delegated Authority

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s market global (re)insurer, has announced the appointment of Simon Morgan as Head of Property Delegated Authority, reporting into Sam Geddes, Head of Property and Allied Lines. Morgan will take up his role in November this year.
In this new role for MS AUL, Morgan will be leading and setting the underwriting strategy for the company’s Property Binders and Facilities teams, and supporting the growth of the wider property proposition.
Morgan brings more than two decades of experience in the property market. He joins from Hiscox, where during a 15 year tenure, most recently as Divisional Director for Property in its London Markets business, he oversaw a portfolio of $500m, developing and implementing the company’s Property underwriting strategy. Prior to this, Morgan was a Property Underwriter at Kiln where he wrote a diverse and international portfolio of property risks through a variety of placement channels.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited appoints Malcolm Barnes as Head of Marine Reinsurance

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s market global (re)insurer, announced the appointment of Malcolm Barnes as Head of Marine Reinsurance. Barnes will take up his role in September this year.
With a career spanning more than 35 years in the reinsurance sector, Barnes joins MS AUL from Canopius, where he was Head of Marine Treaty. Prior to this, Barnes was Divisional Director for Reinsurance at Amtrust with responsibility for all inwards reinsurance business. Barnes also spent a number of years as Vice President at XL Re, as well as Guy Carpenter where he held a variety of business development and broking responsibilities.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited appoints Vipul Gupta as Senior Executive Officer in Dubai

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s global specialty (re)insurer, today announces the appointment of Vipul Gupta as Senior Executive Officer (SEO) in Dubai, subject to regulatory approval. Gupta has held the role on an interim basis since July 2021 and reports to Johan Slabbert, Chief Executive Officer, with a secondary reporting line to Andrew Carrier, Chief Underwriting Officer.
With more than 13 years of experience in the London and Middle East North Africa (MENA) markets, Gupta has been a key member of the MS Amlin MENA underwriting team since 2015, where he joined as a Senior Underwriter for War, Terrorism & Political Risk.
Prior to joining MS Amlin, Gupta was the Divisional Director for Willis’ MENA region, including the Indian sub-continent, for three years. He began his career at J.B. Boda UK as a Reinsurance Broker in 2008.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited launches Phoenix 2 Re

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s global specialty (re)insurer, announces that MS Amlin Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd (MS AAP), its Singapore-based operation, has launched its second local special purpose reinsurance vehicle (SPRV); Phoenix 2 Re Pte. Ltd. This SPRV will provide a quota share to MS AAP for its select reinsurance portfolio written via its underwriting platform in Singapore, and complements the landmark SPRV, Phoenix 1 Re, in terms of ceded business and structure.
Phoenix 2 Re has secured USD37.5m of collateralised capacity through a number of Asia-based investors. MS AAP worked in conjunction with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), to establish Phoenix 2 Re, using an insurance-linked securities (ILS) catastrophe bond grant, alongside Hong Kong-based ILS specialist ILS Advisers, part of the HSZ Group.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited appoints David Mocklow as US Chief Financial Officer & Chief Claims Officer

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL) announced the appointment of David Mocklow as Chief Financial Officer & Chief Claims Officer of a newly formed, US based sister company, MS Amlin Distribution Holdings (MS ADH). Mocklow takes up the roles with immediate effect, and will report into Johan Slabbert CEO of MS ADH.
MS ADH will play a fundamental role in MS AUL’s US underwriting strategy, announced earlier this year with the acquisition of US Managing General Agency (MGA) International Transportation and Marine Office LLC (ITMO), alongside an investment in InQlusiv LLC, a US based Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) focussed MGA. MS ADH will explore further acquisitions and investment opportunities for MS AUL, whilst serving as the holding company for future US based acquisitions.
Mocklow brings more than 25 years of experience in (re)insurance and capital markets. He joins MS ADH from Gramercy Risk Management, where as a founding member of the team he served as Head of Strategy & Corporate Development, providing underwriting, risk management, loss control and claims management services to the US property and casualty insurance industry. Prior to this, Mocklow worked for the investment banking firm Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller and for Aon, where has was a founding member of the Aon Capital Markets team in Chicago.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited appoints Richard Bayman as Head of Aviation Reinsurance

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s global specialty (re)insurer, announced the appointment of Richard Bayman as Head of Aviation Reinsurance. Bayman will take up the role in Q3 2021, subject to regulatory approval, and report directly to Matthew Wilken, Head of Reinsurance.
Bayman brings more than twenty years of experience in the aviation (re)insurance market to MS AUL, most recently as Head of Aerospace at Chubb where he was responsible for strategic planning and underwriting performance.

Slabbert Succeeds Clementi as Chief Executive Officer of MS Amlin Underwriting Ltd.

MS Amlin Underwriting Ltd. (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s re/insurer, announced the appointment of Johan Slabbert as chief executive officer. Slabbert will take up the role on Nov. 1, 2020, subject to regulatory approval.

Slabbert succeeds Tom Clementi, who will step down from his position as CEO on 31 October 2020 after 4 years in the role to pursue other opportunities outside of MS Amlin. Clementi will remain with the business until the end of the year to support a smooth transition and regulatory handover. Clementi has led MS AUL since late 2016 having originally joined MS Amlin in 2007 and held a number of leadership roles across the MS Amlin group of companies over the last decade.
As part of his transition to the role of CEO, Slabbert will step down from his position as chairman of the MS AUL board. Martin Hudson, currently a non-executive director for MS AUL and chair of the Underwriting Oversight Committee, will act as interim chairman, subject to regulatory approval.
Slabbert brings more than two decades of leadership experience in the international re/insurance market, having held several CEO and CFO roles. He first joined MS AUL in May when he was appointed as a non-executive director and chairman of the board.
Slabbert began his career at AIG before joining Chaucer Ltd. as CFO, where he was also CEO for two years, and served as Operating Partner and CEO of Augustus Specialty LLC. While at AIG, Slabbert spent six years in Japan and has been working within the MSI group for some time in his role as Chairman of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company (Europe) Ltd, a position he has held since 2017.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited appoints Johan Slabbert and Martin Hudson as Non-Executive Directors

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s (re)insurer, today announces the appointments of Johan Slabbert and Martin Hudson as Non-Executive Directors.
Subject to regulatory approval, Slabbert will also be appointed Chairman of the MS AUL Board, taking over from Gilles Bonvarlet who will transition to an Independent Non-Executive Director role. Hudson will take on additional duties as Chairman of the MS AUL Underwriting Committee.
MS AUL has also announced that Derek Thornton, who serves as a Non-Executive Director, is to retire from the Board.
Slabbert is a recognised leader in the industry with more than two decades of international experience in both CEO and CFO roles. He joins MS AUL whilst serving as Chairman of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company (Europe) Ltd. Prior to this, Slabbert began his career at AIG before joining Chaucer Limited as CFO, where he was also CEO for two years, and serving as Operating Partner and CEO of Augustus Specialty LLC.
Hudson joins MS AUL with 30 years of experience in senior leadership roles across a diverse number of insurance and reinsurance companies. Hudson currently advises Apollo Syndicate Management, Sirius and Old Mutual Specialty Insurance in various non-executive capacities. Previously, Hudson headed Travelers Insurance Company and Old Mutual Specialty Insurance. Hudson also worked at Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Underwriting at Lloyd’s as Director of Underwriting.
