Gallagher Re – Reinsurance Market Report: Results for Full-Year 2024

This report provides in-depth analysis of the capital and profitability of the reinsurance industry, based on the Gallagher Reinsurance Index group of companies.
Key findings from this report

Global reinsurance dedicated capital totalled USD769 billion at full year 2024, an increase of 5.4% versus the restated full year 2023 base. Growth was driven by both the INDEX companies and non-life alternative capital.
Gallagher Re’s in-depth analysis of a subset of 16 reinsurers shows the reported combined ratio further improved to 86.8% (2023 FY: 87.3%). This was driven by a strong improvement in the underlying combined ratio to 93% (2023 FY: 96.0%).
The reported ROE remained strong at 17%, albeit lower than 19.5% at 2023 FY. Despite improved underlying underwriting profitability and higher running investment income, the underlying ROE remained stable at 13.9% due to headwinds outside P&C reinsurance. Without this, the underlying ROE would have been approximately 15%.
Reinsurers are well positioned to maintain strong profitability in 2025. Assuming a ‘normal’ level of natural catastrophe losses, we expect an underlying ROE of around 15% and a headline ROE of approximately 18-19%1. The California wildfires have resulted in substantial insured losses early in the year, but even if these losses prove to be incremental to annual Nat Cat budgets, reinsurers are well placed to deliver headline and underlying ROEs which are roughly double the industry’s cost of capital.
Reflecting the continued strong profitability, traditional reinsurance capital is on track to increase by 6% in 2025. Resilience of the reinsurance industry materially improved over the past three years, driven by significantly improved underlying profitability.

Gallagher Re Natural Catastrophe and Climate Report 2024

In 2024, the estimated total direct economic costs from global natural perils were USD417 billion. The private insurance market and public insurance entities covered USD154 billion of that total. The annual average loss from natural catastrophes from 2017 to 2024 has cost insurers USD146 billion. This suggests a ‘new normal’ approaching USD150 billion per year.
The severity and frequency of natural catastrophe events continue to rise, impacting both traditional and non-traditional insurance markets worldwide. These developments highlight the growing need to better understand the interconnected risks posed by climate change, specific peril loss drivers, and socioeconomic factors.
With insights from Gallagher Re experts, the broader Gallagher family, and our academic partners via the Gallagher Research Centre, this report provides a comprehensive analysis of natural catastrophe and climate risk trends, offering guidance to clients and stakeholders across the private and public sectors.

Gallagher Re: 2023 Natural Catastrophe and Climate Report

In 2023, the estimated total economic costs of direct physical damage and net-loss business interruption from global natural perils was USD357 billion. The private insurance market and public insurance entities covered an estimated USD123 billion of that total. This marks the fourth consecutive year that nominal insured losses have topped USD100 billion, and the sixth year out of the last seven.
The severity and high-impact frequency of natural catastrophe events continues to rise, and those of us in the insurance industry face the responsibility of identifying the risks challenging not only the private sector, but also governmental entities and emergency managers, among others.
This report aims to fulfill part of that responsibility. With expertise and emerging research from Gallagher Re colleagues, as well as across the Gallagher family and the Gallagher Research Centre’s academic partners, we contextualize the effects of natural catastrophe risk, climate change and an evolving regulatory environment on clients and other private and public sector stakeholders.
Readers of this report can expect to:

Explore global and regional catastrophe peril and loss drivers.
Learn which regions are facing changing loss patterns.

Better understand how global regulatory demands and climate disclosure requirements are evolving.
